As a Maths trainer I find it disappointing that many students today (at an early age of 5-10 years) find themselves struggling with basic Math concepts. Upon closer examination, a recurring pattern emerges: the traditional approach to teaching mathematics in schools often lacks variety and engagement. Teachers are typically required to adhere to a predetermined curriculum and follow a fixed & structured teaching method. This approach leaves little room for flexibility, as the teachers must maintain a set pace to ensure the syllabus is completed within the timeframe mandated by school authorities. As a result, some students may find it difficult to keep up with the pace, leading to gaps in foundational understanding and diminishing their confidence in math as they move to higher classes.
This is simply unfortunate and as parents we must seek effective alternate options to ensure that our kids do not fall behind in today’s competitive world. In the world of Mathematics, Abacus classes and Vedic Maths classes are such two great alternate options available that can help to create a strong foundation of Maths for kids. In this blog today we are going to talk about specifically the Abacus course, which is a great tool that provides parents with a wonderful option to help the kids overcome fear of Maths.

While there are numerous benefits of Abacus as we have explained on our Abacus page on our portal, I would list my selective favorites out of that big list in my capacity as Mathcruise’s chief trainer.
When these young kids develop such a strong hold on calculation and numbers, they inevitably gain high self confidence since most other students (who follow the regular school approach) take much higher time in any type of calculation. Moreover other students are dependent on traditional techniques and hence use paper and pen, which means Abacus trained kids are able to do the calculation at least 5x faster. This simple fact shoots up the self-confidence of Abacus kids tremendously, and it helps them in all spheres of life, not just academics. And that too lifelong.
The Abacus methodology is heavily based on right brain development. You may not be aware, but all humans have two brains (right and left) and by default the left brain drives all our logical actions like reading, driving, cooking or even walking throughout our life. On the other hand, the right brain gets simulated only with specific activities like dancing, music etc which takes us into the relaxation zone. Other than these, Abacus methodology is based on hand-eye-ear coordination where the child is taught to do the finger movement by both hands simultaneously in a fast manner, as he listens to the questions attentively.
In the initial stages of Abacus, the child uses both the hands to do the beads movement on the physical Abacus tool and as he gains mastery on the tool, he does the finger movement by both the hands simultaneously, but in the air. Through this Visualization process he creates a picture of the Abacus tool in his mind and keeps on refreshing that picture for every number. This is the real beauty of Abacus: as soon as the trainer speaks the last number, the child has the answer ready immediately (based on the latest Abacus tool image), which seems even faster than the calculator.
Many parents wonder how the Abacus program contributes to their child’s understanding of basic mathematics. The primary goal of the Abacus course is to empower children with the ability to perform arithmetic calculations both quickly and accurately. This includes not only simple, single-digit addition and subtraction but also more complex operations such as multiplication and division involving decimal numbers.

In contrast, many students without this foundation often struggle with numerical computations, which limits their ability to grasp higher‑level concepts. For example, while solving complex trigonometric equations, Abacus‑trained students can perform calculations mentally and with confidence, allowing them to concentrate on conceptual clarity, logical reasoning, and problem‑solving strategies. This ability to shift focus from calculations to comprehension significantly enhances academic performance and builds long‑term confidence in mathematics.

In fact, programs focused on Abacus and Mental Arithmetic for kids are designed specifically to strengthen a child’s ability to calculate quickly and accurately.
