If we know such mistakes then we can take the corrective measures at the right time to get the maximum benefit of time and money that your child is spending.

As a certified Abacus trainer let me cover all the key aspects related to such common mistakes and different stages of Abacus training when these mistakes occur, starting from enrolling into the course and also during the learning process.

  • Mistake#1 – Preferring a bigger brand (or a company) over a good Abacus trainer

One of the most common mistakes parents and students make when enrolling in Abacus Maths classes is prioritizing the reputation of a well-known brand or company above the skills and quality of the Abacus trainer. While established brands may offer standardized materials and a recognized name, the effectiveness of the learning experience is heavily dependent on the skills, dedication, and teaching style of the Abacus teacher. A skilled Abacus trainer can adapt their teaching methods to suit the needs of each student, provide personalized feedback, and foster a supportive learning environment. In my personal experience as an Abacus trainer you need to wait for a minimum of 6 months to view tangible results, by which time a child completes two Abacus levels and hence effectively performs single digit addition and subtraction (up to 15 numbers) mentally using visualization.

  • Mistake#3 – Not doing the Abacus classes homework daily

Another most common mistake observed among students in Abacus classes is the tendency to disregard the teacher’s guidance regarding daily homework. Many students, instead of practicing consistently each day, choose to complete all their Abacus assignments just one day before their next class. This approach is often supported by parents who treat online Abacus classes similar to the regular schoolwork, failing to recognize that Abacus is a skill that demands steady, rhythmic practice. Unlike traditional academic homework, Abacus learning thrives on daily engagement. When students neglect this routine, it adversely affects their progress, resulting in slower development of calculation speed and weaker visualization skills. Consistent daily practice is essential for mastering Abacus, and skipping this crucial step can significantly hinder a student’s overall growth and performance in the subject.

  • Mistake#4 – Giving step treatment to Abacus as a side course and not attending the classes regularly

When Abacus classes are not prioritized and students skip sessions or attend irregularly, it results in missed concepts and disrupted learning continuity. Regular attendance is crucial in Abacus because each lesson builds on the previous one, and gaps in attendance can make it challenging for students to keep up with the pace of the class. This inconsistent approach prevents them from mastering key techniques, slows down their overall progress, and diminishes the effectiveness of the training.   • Mistake#5 – Not giving enough attention to right technique of moving beads on Abacus tool as taught by the trainer

Often students do not focus on mastering the correct technique for moving the beads, as demonstrated and emphasized by their trainer (for example when to use index finger and when to use thumb for bead movement on the tool). The foundational skills in Abacus rely heavily on precise finger movements and the right way of handling the tool. When students overlook these techniques or develop their own shortcuts, it hinders the development of speed and mental visualization. Repeatedly practicing the correct bead movements ensures the formation of proper motor memory, making complex calculations easier as students progress through higher levels. By carefully following the trainer’s instructions and dedicating attention to the recommended techniques, students will achieve better accuracy and efficiency in their Abacus practice, ultimately leading to greater confidence and long-term success in Abacus Maths.

  • Mistake #6 – Choosing large batches of 20–30 students

One of the biggest factors in the success of Abacus classes is whether the teacher can give your child enough individual attention. Important skills such as finger movement for visualization and correct bead movement on the physical Abacus require close observation, timely correction, and regular practice.

Small batches are usually far more effective because they allow the teacher to:

  • monitor each child closely
  • correct mistakes immediately, and
  • provide guidance based on the child’s pace and learning style.

In large batches, this level of attention is difficult to provide. As a result, children may continue practicing incorrect techniques, which can slow their progress and reduce the overall effectiveness of the course.

Many parents choose larger batches because the fees are lower. However, the lower cost can be misleading. In many cases, a child may spend 3–4 years in a large-batch program, while the same course could have been completed in about 2 years with a skilled trainer in a smaller group. I have personally seen many such cases, and they often happen simply because parents are not given the right guidance at the time of enrollment.
