How Many Levels in Abacus and Why They Matter

The Abacus course is undoubtedly a lifetime gift for children. In the field of Mathematics, Abacus classes help kids gain superfast speed and achieve 100% accurate results in all types of arithmetic calculations (and all just in mind, without using paper or a pen at all). Hence no surprise that Abacus trained kids are often called ‘Human Calculators’.

To get a deeper insight, let us look at some of the arithmetic questions that the kids who have completed their Abacus course can easily solve mentally. These questions are listed level-wise, to clearly illustrate that after a particular level what level of proficiency we can expect from the kids.

After completion of Abacus Level-1

Kids who complete the Mathcruise Abacus level-1 can easily perform the questions similar to following, which includes Addition and Subtraction of Single Digit (upto 6-10 numbers) using Abacus Tool.

Age: 5-6 yrs (Kids who complete 1 level of Training)
Using Abacus Tool

After completion of Abacus Level-2

After completion of Mathcruise Abacus Level-2, the child can easily perform all the questions of level-1 without using the physical Abacus tool, just in his mind. Isn’t this amazing? This is made possible via the Abacus Visualization technique.

What is Abacus Visualization Technique and how does it work?

  • In the Abacus Visualization Technique, the kids learn to create the image of Abacus physical tool in their mind (the default image in reset position), and they imagine doing the bead movement in that image. After each step they replace the old image with the new image. With regular practice for a couple of months, the kids become quite fluent and they are able to mentally perform the calculations without using any paper or pen.
  • Yes, it sounds unbelievable when you hear this amazing phenomenon for the first time. Watch out the demo of our proud Mathcruise students here in the students video gallery, and you will realize that this is actually true.

After completion of Abacus Level-3

Kids who complete the Mathcruise Abacus level-3 can easily perform the questions similar to following, which includes Addition and Subtraction of Double Digit (upto 6-10 numbers) using Abacus Tool.

Age: 7-8 yrs (Kids who complete 3 levels of Training)
Using Abacus Tool

Double Digit Addition & Subtraction

After completion of Abacus Level-4

After completion of Mathcruise Abacus level-4, the child can easily perform all the questions of level-3 without using the physical Abacus tool, just in his mind. Again, this is made possible due to the magic of Abacus Visualization technique, as explained earlier.

How Many Levels in Abacus and Why They Matter

As a parent you must be aware that there is no fixed global standard with respect to the number of Abacus levels. Every Abacus training school has different levels with every level covering different topics, but sadly many schools just increase the overall number of levels to drag the total course duration much longer, since more levels means more tuition fees.

However at Mathcruise we believe in optimally defining the Abacus levels to give absolute clarity to both parents and the kids. We strictly adhere to our Abacus curriculum in accordance to these levels.

  • We offer a total of 9 Abacus levels
  • Each Abacus level is for 3 months and has a pre-defined curriculum
  • Our Abacus course spans across a total of 27 months

Online Abacus Classes – Is it a short term or long term course?

This is a very common question in every parent’s mind. Let’s talk through this very important topic and share some useful insights from our chief trainer Meenu Gupta who has been running effective online Abacus classes for a decade now.

  • Abacus is a Mid to long term course, ranging from 6 months to 2.5 years
  • Parents should not expect any tangible results in just a few days or weeks. You need to be patient and trust the teacher.
  • The golden Mantra is that the kids must regularly attend the Abacus online classes (actually it does not matter whether the classes are offline or online as long as the trainer is good) and must practice Abacus for a minimum of 10 minutes every day.
  • If the child takes a shortcut by practicing 10 x 6 = 60 minutes once a week (which many smart kids try) you will not achieve the desired results, since the daily Abacus practice is the key to this magic. Reason is simple science: daily practice registers the Abacus formulas and the correct finger movement technique in the child’s brain, and the brain starts processing those instructions fluently. Else if the child practices once or twice in  week, the brain forgets the earlier training. Simple.
  • At a minimum, we recommend that the child must learn Abacus for 6 months where he can easily cover two Abacus levels, after which he will be able to do double digit addition and subtraction mentally. This will tremendously help him in school Math also
  • After the two levels, parents can decide to quit as well if they are short of time, or if the child has other priorities. The learnings of these two Abacus levels will remain with the child forever.

How does each Abacus level matter?

Division of Online Abacus Classes into multiple levels is crucial and holds great importance due to following key reasons:

  • Predefined Abacus levels give full visibility to parents and students with respect to the time expected to be taken for the whole course, as well as the curriculum to be covered in each level.
  • Every level is like a step upward in the ladder to the success journey and generates more confidence in the kid. Also especially at Mathcruise we always ensure to practice the topics of all earlier levels , so that the child never forgets any concept learnt previously
  • At the end of each level, we conduct an online examination (timebound) to validate the understanding of the child. We promote the child to the next level only if he secures a good result, else we discuss with the parent about the need for the child to repeat the level. We value your money and time, and always ensure that we let you know if there are any learning gaps in the Abacus training so far (instead of blindly promoting the child to the next level like most other schools).
  • At the end of each level, we provide the certificate to the child with the result grade, that further boosts his confidence.

Here is the level wise detailed curriculum being followed at Mathcruise. This is also available on our web portal Abacus Page and is kept updated at all times.
